1999 USSSA Women’s Major Slow Pitch World Series

1999 held at Lexington, South Carolina.

Champion – Santa Monica Yankees, Poway, California
Runner Up – Orlando Shooters, Orlando, Florida

The roller coaster season for the Santa Monica Yankees ends with a 10-7 victory over the Orlando Shooters to capture the 1999 USSSA Women’s Class A World Series. The Yankees, based out of Southern California, with long time coach Jerry Cohen have played in all but two, USSSA Women’s World Series.

The Yankee’s third game put them against the number one ranked team Diamond Queens. In the third inning, down by one Diamond Queen’s Sue Koziol started the way for her team to score 5 runs. The 5 runs were not as costly to the Yankees as losing to injury third base Connie Tutaj. Top of the sixth, third base replacement, Robin Berkowitz, hits a 2 run triple igniting the Yankees to score 6 runs, to go ahead by 1. Diamond Queens were held in the sixth and seventh giving the Yankees a 12-10 victory.

In the winners final the Yankees went through the batting order scoring 6 runs in the fourth and again in the sixth to advance to the championship game over the Orlando Shooters 21-6.

Orlando Shooters were able to hold off a 5 run seventh inning run by third place finishers Supersonics Shooters, Tiffany Daniel’s 3 run double in the third was huge for their 6-5 victory.

In the championship game, Orlando Shooters’ Lisa Lines scores in the first to start the Shooters to a 7-1 victory forcing the “if” game.

The final game was definitely an exciting one. The Yankees came out swinging with Mel Reinard and Brandy Brandes scoring in the first inning. Yankees’ Brandy Brandes hit a 2 run triple in the second inning. Orlando Shooters answered back scoring 5 runs with 2 outs in the fourth. Shooters’ Kim King hit a 2 run double. Going into the seventh the scored was tied at 7. Yankees’ Aimee Reinard, Terri Sopko, and MVP Mary Hoff all scored giving them a 3 run cushion. With bases loaded Yankees’ Chris Wellendorf caught a long fly ball to end the game.

Orlando Shooters manager Gayle Burkhart, said they had a second place jinx all year. Meanwhile Yankees first year manager/coach Sean Melvin was in tears over their victory.

1999 ASA Women’s Major Fast Pitch Nationals

1999 held at Stratford, Connecticut.

Champion – California Commotion, Woodland Hills, California
Runner Up – Phoenix Storm, Phoenix, Arizona

Lisa Fernandez of California Commotion had an RBI single in the bottom of the 7th to win the title. Her hit scored Julie Smith and came off 17 year old Keira Goerl of Phoenix Storm.

The Commotion went 6-0 in the Tournament. The pitching staff allowed just five hits for the week and had two perfect games and one no-hitter. The team outscored opponents 23-1 in the six games. Lisa Fernandez and the Commotion outdueled Danielle Henderson and the Brakettes 1-0, 15 K in the winners bracket final. The Phoenix Storm eliminated the Brakettes 2-0 behind the shutout pitching of Keira Goerl. The Commotion Pitching staff had 2 perfect games and a no hitter in the Tournament.

1998 ISA Men’s Super Slow Pitch World Series

1998 held at Gastonia, North Carolina

Carl Rose slammed a no-doubt-about-it grand slam home run after a walk to big Wendell Rickard with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Lighthouse/Worth to a 26-24 win over Sierra/TPS Sunday in the championship game. The tournament was played on a baseball park, with dimensions of 335-360-380-360-335. Sierra forced an extra game with a 20-12 win over Lighthouse that saw Hank Garris wallop four home runs. Darrell Beeler had two homers and Kerry Everett and Greg Cannedy each had 4-for-4 games. Rickard had four boomers for Lighthouse in the deciding game. Al Davis had three and he was the tournament’s leading hitter with an .810 average.

1999 ASA Men’s Super Slow Pitch Nationals

1999 held at Sanford Memorial Stadium in Sanford, Florida on August 10-12.

Champion – Team Easton, Burlingame, California (56-27)
Runner Up – Team TPS, Louisville, Kentucky (77-14)

The championship was not decided until the “if” game, here is the First Final, Team TPS 20, Team Easton 19. Team Easton, without the benefit of a home run, scored 7 in the top of the first inning. Team TPS managed only one. The last out came when left fielder Robin Higginbotham made a leaping catch at the fence on Randell Boone.

Dan Schuck hit a 2-runner against the wind in the top of the second. Johnny McCraw and Mike Shenk had back to back triples. Team Easton continued to base hit, stretching the bulge to 13-1. Mike Glasscock came out to have a meeting with his team. “Go to a 7-man infield,” yelled one of the Team Easton players.

With Team TPS trailing 18 to 7 come into bat in the bottom of the 4th. Jeff Wallace’s 3-run home run with 2 outs in the bottom of the fifth pulls Team TPS within 18-17. Wallace, Hank Garris and Todd Martin each have 9 home runs. “We got a ballgame going, let’s go,” says Team Easton’s Jeff Hall. “We got a good game going.” “We didn’t need that zero in the (top of) fifth,” said Brett Helmer of Team Easton.

Team Easton didn’t need another blank in the bottom of the sixth, but that’s what they got. Rusty Bumgardner and Todd Martin homered to start the bottom of the sixth, giving Team TPS the lead at 19-18. Martin’s was his 10th, giving him the tournament lead. “It’s a one-inning game,” said Dan Schuck as Team Easton comes to bat in the top of the 7th . . . on the short end of a 19-18 score.

Team Easton is at the top of their order, Jeff Hall, Brett Helmer, Larry Fredieu, Todd Joerling and Dan Schuck. It’s starting to rain. Hall raps a single. Helmer homers into the teeth of the rain and wind. 20-19 Team Easton. But wait, Hall was caught off the base before the pitch. Dead ball. Do it again, says the head umpire. “You can do it again, Brett,” says Robin Higginbotham from the Team Eastons bench. “Go hard, Large,” hollers another teammate. “Say you will.” Helmer walks. Fredieu steps in. Fredieu flies out, to the fence in left. Joerling’s turn.

Glasscock calls a timeout. Stay tuned . . . Joerling flies to deep left center (against the wind) for a sac fly. Darrell Beeler flies out. 19-19 going into the top of the 7th. John Mello leads off the bottom of the 7th with a double to left center and when the ball kicks away from Johnny McCraw and Robin Higginbotham, Mello scores.

Now onto the “IF” Game for all the marbles – Team Easton 16 defeated Team TPS 14, After Team Easton draws a blank in the top of the 6th, Home runs by Randell Boone, Doug Kissane, John Mello and Jeff Wallace put Team TPS ahead 14-12 headed for the top of the 7th. Dewayne Nevitt has 2 HR in the game, giving him 10 for the weekend. Wallace has 12 and a bunch of RBI. Darrell Beeler starts the 7th inning with a single. Johnny McCraw is robbed of a hit on diving grab by Jason Kendrick in center field. Mike Shenk sac fly makes the score 13-14. Ron Parnell gets RBI single making the score 14-14. Greg Harding gets a hit. 2 out, 2 on. J.C. Phelps called on to pinch hit. He hits grounder which kicks off Demond Thomas at third. Everybody safe.

Team Easton bench has their rally caps on. Bases loaded for Jeff Hall. He lines a single to left field, for 2 RBI. 16-14. Brett Helmer walks, bases loaded again.

Team TPS bottom of the 7th: Rusty Bumgardner flies to left. Todd Martin walks. Randell Boone walks. Bill Messina is new pitcher to start this inning. Doug Kissane hits low liner to Ron Parnell at middle infielder. He steps on second, but his throw to first for a triple play is way high. But no triple play needed. Force at second would have bee third out. Big discussion on whether Parnell trapped ball or not, or whether he got the force at secone. Long discussion. Long, long discussion. It was ruled that Boone was safe at second. Phil Jobe up with 2 outs and runners on 2nd and 3rd. Jobe pops up. Game over.

Team Easton wins 16-14 for second Grand Slam title.

1999 ASA Men’s B Slow Pitch Nationals

1999 held at Montgomery, Alabama on September 23-26.

Caraway Steel of Alabama and Miller/McGaffer of Illinois met three times in the ASA Class B national tournament at Lagoon Park in Montgomery, Ala. Caraway won two, and claimed the national title. A grand slam home run by MVP to be Paul Judah gave Caraway a 21-18 win in the semifinal round of the winners bracket. Miller McGaffer, which won a game late Saturday night and three on Sunday, forced an extra game in the championship round with a 31-12 romp as Scott Becker hit two home runs and Jim Walsh, Jim Lynch and Jeff Sahazian and John Doss one each. Walsh and Dave Shaff each had 4 hits. Lynch had a single and 2-run HR in a 10-run top of the first. Miller McGaffer built a 17-12 lead going into the bottom of the fourth of the deciding game. Caraway broke loose for 8 runs, with the big blow being a grand slam home run by Keith Eldridge. Caraway won 32-27 as Eldridge went on to total 9 RBI in the game. He had a 3-runner in a 12-run bottom of the fifth, and 3 homers in the game. He had 8 for the tournament. Becker was the tourney leader with 10. Other Caraway homers in the 12-run inning included a 2-runner by Andrew Judah and a 3-runner by Paul Judah. For the game, Eldridge was 4-for-5, Paul Judah 4-for-6. Jeff and Bill Sahagian each had 2 HRs for Miller. Key plays for Caraway in the infield in the last inning were made by second baseman Craig English, middle infielder Sandy Jones and pitcher J.R. Phillips.

(Note: D&K/Worth of Los Angeles, one of the favorites, won six games in the losers bracket before being eliminated by the Bulls of S.C. (22-13). D&K was knocked into the losers bracket by Shadowfax of Pa. (15-14). Jean Shoppe of McKenzie, Tenn., was another favorite, advancing all the way to the winners bracket finals before losing to Caraway 34-31. It was 10-9 after one and 20-9 after two innings. Caraway had back to back 11-run innings to build up a 34-23 command. Eldridge, Jerry Goodson and Sammy Moore had triples. Paul Judah had 3 hits. Ron Roland had a homer and another hit. Craig English had a homer. Big Barry Shirley had a grand slam in the first and another homer for Jean Shoppe, while Ricky Bryant had 2 HRs. Big plays on defense for Caraway were turned in by Terry Goodson at short, Sammy Moore in right field and pitcher J.R. Phillips. Eldridge was a steady performer in left field all weekend.)

1999 USSSA Men’s Major Slow Pitch World Series

1999 held at Cocoa, Florida.

Dan Smith defeated R&D/Easton in the first final 13-8 to force the winner take all “if” Championship Game. R&D, led by Randy Kortokrax, who launched a pair of Home Runs, the Easton squad won 20-16. Dan Smith was led by Tournament MVP Wendell Rickard, who kept the game close for Dan Smith as he hit 3 Homers in the game. He led the tournament in HRs (9) and RBIs (25). Dan Smith lost early and made its way back to the final by defeating Team Easton 19-16, and then Hague/Resmondo 9-7 to gain the loser’s bracket finals against Hendu/Long Haul/TPS. Dan Smith’s Scott Striebel went 4-4 with 8 RBIs as they eliminated Hendu’s to earn a shot at R&D/Easton in the finals. R&D previously defeated top seeded Team TPS 19-18 to put them in the loser’s bracket. The TPS men never recovered as they were eliminated by Hendu’s 30-21. Rob Schleede of R&D was the Defensive MVP as he backed pitcher Scott Nastally in helping to hold down the big bats of the Dan Smith squad. The games were played in a steady rain.
