2009 NCAA Women’s College World Series

2009 held at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on May 28 – June 2.

Champion – Washington Huskies (51-12)
Runner Up – Florida Gators (65-3)

Washington (51-12) kept the championship in the Pac-10 by keeping Florida from bringing the Southeastern Conference its first title. The Pac-10 has won 21 of the 27 Women’s College World Series titles, with Arizona State and Washington joining powerhouses UCLA (11 championships) and Arizona (eight) the past two years.

National player of the year Danielle Lawrie (42-8) shut out the top-seeded Gators (63-5) the rest of the way to clinch the title with a two-game sweep. She pitched every inning of the Huskies’ six games at the World Series.

Florida’s Aja Paculba led off the game with a triple to right-center field past a diving Aly McWherter and scored on a passed ball. Kristina Hilbreth reached on an error, moved to second on Enea’s infield single and was able to sneak into third on a steal when Stuart was too far from the base to tag her. She scored on Bush’s sacrifice fly.

Washington answered immediately against Nelson, who led the nation in ERA but was coming off two of her worst outings of the season. Lawrie’s RBI single and a wild pitch that brought in Pohlman evened the score at 2.

With Lawrie and Canadian Olympic teammate Jenn Salling leading the way, the Huskies were right at home in Oklahoma City.

Lawrie settled down after some shaky defense put the third-seeded Huskies in a 2-0 hole. She finished with a pair of strikeouts after Christina Enea narrowly missed a tying home run with a line drive off the left field wall in the seventh inning.

2009 USSSA Men’s Major Slow Pitch World Series

2009 held at Champion Stadium in Osceola, Florida.

Champion – Resmondo/Specialty Tank/Worth, Winter Haven, Florida
Runner Up – T&R Stucco/Worth, Polk City, Florida

This was the year Long Haul Trucking was in the championship game against Resmondo and decided to vacate the tournament. Notice no Long Haul players appear in the All World Team.

What began as a well played and entertaining tournament was marred in the winner’s bracket semi-final game Friday night between Long Haul and Dan Smith when what appeared to be a bat protest by the Dan Smith team turned into a 17 minute debacle in front of the largest crowd in recent softball memory. The end result appears to be the suspension of Long Haul’s star shortstop Brett McCollum who argued after the game with USSSA officials who said his bat compression test was too low. To set the stage for this scene, you have to realize that USSSA has been compression testing bats all year long. At the World Series the testing was being administered right on the field behind home plate so that it could be done as quickly as possible. In the managers meeting teams and players were warned that bats that tested too low could lead to ejection for unsportsmanlike conduct and runs could even be removed from the score.

(The accounts, descriptions, and opinions expressed in this article are soley the thoughts of Dale Weiser and are NOT representative of the USSSA.)

2009 ASA Men’s B Slow Pitch Nationals

2009 ASA B held at Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, on October 3-5.

Champion – Tharaldson Enterprises, Fargo, North Dakota (WEST)
Runner Up – ChecKing/Worth, New Haven, Connecticut (EAST)

Tharaldson Enterprises sweeps through Men’s Class B with 3-0 Record

Tharaldson Enterprises took the Hooters Championship Series Men’s Class B National Championship trophy back to Fargo, N.D., after shutting out Checking/Worth 13-0. It marked the first time in the history of the tournament that the Western Champions have claimed the top spot in the nation.

On Friday, Tharaldson defeated Checking/Worth 18-8 in six innings then topped them again 8-7 for the advantage in the best of five series. The fourth and fifth games were not necessary for Tharaldson to take the championship, thanks to the extraordinary efforts of tournament MVP Chaun Demars. In the first game, he hit a two-RBI single to left field in the second and a two-RBI double to left center in the sixth. Demars hit a two-run homer in the first inning of Game 2 then hit two more two-run blasts, batting 6-for-8, with 10 RBI on the first day of competition.

Demars started Saturday by hitting his sixth home run of the tournament — a two run blast in the bottom of the first. After Demars was intentionally walked in the third and fourth innings, he still made an impact for Tharaldson, scoring on a Jim Schlieman (Fargo, N.D.) sacrifice fly to center field and a Schlieman three RBI double. First baseman Schlieman led Tharaldson on the day with three RBI. “It’s always nice to win but it’s a little extra special when you can lock down an MVP trophy,” said Demars (Becker, Minn.), who went 7-for-9 from the plate with 12 RBI over the three games. “Those don’t happen very often.”

But the greatest contributions to Tharaldson Enterprises may have been from someone on the bench — team sponsor Gary Tharaldson, who flew to Oklahoma City to support the team.“We did this for Gary,” Riggs said.

“I’ve been coaching Gary Tharaldson’s team for 10 years now. I’m not just saying this because he’s our sponsor but he’s the best sponsor in the nation,” Riggs said. “At this level, we get unlimited support from Gary. He’s a softball fanatic. He loves ASA Softball.”
