2008 ASA C Men’s Slow Pitch Nationals

2008 held at Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Champion – Suburban Softball, Kalamazoo, Michigan
Runner Up – CA/JO/Absolute Bail Company, Chesapeake, Virginia

SUBURBAN/SKS WINS MEN’S CLASS C CHAMPIONSHIP WITH 2 A.M. VICTORY

Finishing in the wee hours of the morning, the Men’s C title was gutted out by CA/JO and Suburban/SKS ending at 1:40 a.m. with Suburban/SKS on top 14 to 13 in eight innings. CA/JO made a valiant effort in the bottom of the seventh inning scoring seven runs to tie the game at 13 before the winning run was walked in for Suburban/ SKS to take home the title trophy. Representing the North in the first year of the four corners concept for Men’s Class C, Suburban/SKS finished their pool play at 1-2 and came into the final day as the No. 2 seed. They were 2-0 in the bracket coming into the first match-up with CA-JO, but their bats fell short in a 20-8 defeat forcing the “if game.” But with their spirits and energy high after midnight, they burned the midnight oil in order to claim the title of 2008 ASA Men’s Class C National Champions.

The MVP award was given to Todd Fairbanks (Jackson, Mich.) who led all batters for Suburban/SKS hitting .636 (14-of-22) for the weekend. As a team, the champions hit .484 with six total home runs recorded.

  • MVP – Todd Fairbanks, Suburban/Street Kids Softball – .636 (14-of-22)

2008 ASA Men’s A Slow Pitch Nationals

2008 held at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on September 25-28.

Champion – ABS/Easton, Hartley, Delaware
Runner Up – TCP/Easton, Burlington, Iowa

ABS Easton of Delaware traveled the furthest for the ASA Class A National Championship. And the trip was worth it. ABS returns to Delaware as the 2008 ASA A National Champ after turning back a determined TCP team 15-10, in the if game at the ASA Hall of Fame Stadium.

The loss ended a tremendous run for TCP, who finished 6-2, which was led by pitcher Losson White who was named the tournament’s MVP and clearly deserved it as he did everything he could to propel his team to victory. In fact, if it wasn’t for White, TCP might not have advanced to the if game. It was White’s two-run scorching liner off in the bottom of the seventh that scored the winning and tying runs in a 20-19 win in the first championship game to force the if game. The 29-year-old White batted .677 and drove in 12 runs. The front of White’s jersey was evident how hard he worked to get TCP to the championship. It was covered with the Oklahoma red clay as he time and time again dove for balls and stopped them to make the play, some of them spectacular.

Brett Helmer, one of the pick-ups for ABS, drove in three runs and finished with a 3-for-4 performance and shared the HR trophy with two other players.

The tournament leading hitter was Brian Wegman of ABS, the other ABS pick-up, who batted .900 (18-20, with 7 HR and 18 RBI).

Winning pitcher Bill Honeycutt and Shaun Ballard also had 3 hits each for ABS, which won its first ASA Class A title.

2008 ASA Girls Gold 18-Under Fast Pitch Nationals

2008 held at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium Complex in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on August 3-10.

Champion – Gold Coast Hurricanes, Plantation, Florida
Runner Up – Corona Angels Tyson, Corona, California

When the Gold Coast Hurricanes 18U-Norman Gold team was in need of a lift recently in Altamonte Springs, Parkland’s Meghan King delivered.

King won three games, had a 0.88 ERA, and eight strikeouts for the Hurricanes, which won six consecutive games out of the losers’ bracket, to earn a spot in the Amateur Softball Association of America (ASA) Gold Nationals Soft-ball tournament last month in Oklahoma City.

Rylan Harvey, Dakota Villella and Gwen Svekis let their bats do the talking. Harvey finished 12-of-24 (.500) with three homers and a double in elimination games. She also added seven RBI, while allowing no earned runs in seven innings pitched.

Villella, of Hollywood, was 11-for-23 (.478) with three RBI, including a two-run single in the sixth inning to defeat the Central Florida Hurricanes, 4-2, and advance to the losers’ bracket final.

Svekis, of Davie, contributed with a walk-off RBI single against the Gainesville Gold, who attempted to intentionally walk her. In the championship game, Svekis smacked a walk-off sacrifice fly against the Florida Select Ritter team to give the Hurricanes a 2-1 win in eight innings to secure the berth.

Svekis added a double to her .381 batting average.

As a reward for her stellar plays at third, Davie’s Christie Parsons batted .318 with a triple and three sacrifice bunts.

Managed by Jeff Norman, the Hurricanes became the seventh team from Florida to qualify for the ASA Gold Nationals’ 68-team field, joining the Gold Coast Hurricanes Cooper, Miami Stingrays, Gators Gold Flannery, Tampa Mustangs, Florida Storm, and Sarasota Heat.

Lending a hand in the Hurricanes’ 7-1 weekend was Rachael Imig, Kiersten Coffman, Amanda Penton, Chrissy Horton, Sam Sharkey, Jessica Matias, Kristen Scott, Sarah Angulo, Hailey Leonard, Kersten Legacki, Carly Comito and Stephanie Chaiser.

2008 Gold Coast Hurricanes

2008 ASA Women’s Open Slow Pitch Nationals

2008 held at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Champion: Hawks/Miss Kitty, Des Moines, Iowa
Runner Up: Armed Forces, Washington, D.C.

Hawks/Miss Kitty’s, Coming from the loser’s bracket, Hawks/Miss Kitty’s captured the 2008 Women’s Open National Championship in a 6 -5 walk-off decision over the Armed Forces. It was a long day for the winning team as they played five games tallying a 4-1 record. The Hawks forced the “if” game five when they skunked Armed Forces 10-0 in game four. In the final championship win, the Hawks were led by catcher and tournament MVP Sirene Johnson who led the way going 2-for-4 in the final game with three RBI. Armed Forces put up a great fight with four batters each contributing two hits. But they couldn’t hold the lead as Hawks/Miss Kitty’s scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh for the eventual walk-off win. “This team has a great group of talent, but we just needed to pull together our mental game today,” said tournament MVP Sirene Johnson. “And that we did. We lost to Armed Forces twice and we really needed to combine our mental focus with our physical talent to win this. We changed our defense due to their base hits in the game before and we finally started hitting the ball. Our team never gave up! And we love Oklahoma City!” The home run champion went to Hawks/Miss Kitty’s Ruby Nugent while the batting champion went to extra hitter and head coach of the Hawks/Miss Kitty, Christan Dowling.

2007 NCAA Women’s College World Series

2007 held at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on May 31 – June 6.

Champion – Arizona Wildcats (50-14-1)
Runner Up – Tennessee Volunteers (63-8)

Chelsie Mesa’s error in a loss to Tennessee Friday night/early Saturday morning put Arizona in the losers’ bracket.

The Wildcats’ senior second baseman more than vindicated herself.

Mesa provided the crushing blow in a 5-run fifth inning eruption off Tennessee star Monica Abbott to lead Arizona to a 5-0 win Wednesday night in front of 5,533 fans at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium.

It is Arizona’s eighth softball national title.

Arizona junior right-hander Taryne Mowatt was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. Mowatt pitched all 60 innings for the Wildcats, throwing 1,035 pitches. Mowatt allowed only four earned runs in eight games, striking out 79.

Similar to a 1-0, 10-inning loss Tuesday night, Tennessee had ample scoring opportunities but couldn’t score against Mowatt, 42-12. The Volunteers stranded 12 runners in Wednesday’s loss after leaving 14 runners on base in Tuesday’s loss.

The Wildcats rapped out 10 hits off Abbott, the national player of the year. The 5-run fifth was a startling turn around considering no team had scored against Abbott at the 2007 WCWS through 37 innings until Arizona finally pushed across a run in the 10th inning Tuesday night.

Five runs in the fifth was as many runs as Abbott had surrendered in her previous 90 innings.

All-American center fielder Caitlin Lowe, who was 4-for-4, ignited the 5-run explosion with a single that handcuffed Abbott. Jenae Leles busted up a pitchers’ duel with a two-run double. Mesa removed all doubt by slamming a three-run home run.

Beating Abbott once this season has been difficult. Beating the national player twice in as many nights is a major accomplishment. Abbott, 50-5, lost only two games the first three months.
