1984 USSSA Women’s Major Slow Pitch World Series

1984 held at Southgate, Michigan.

Pitcher Brenda Beyer of Little Caesars left no doubt who the Outstanding Defensive player of the tournament would be as she shutout the powerful Lady Comets offense by twirling a 1-0 victory in the Championship game. Outfielder Dottie Davis was the Tournament MVP. This is the 4th World Championship for Al Campbell and his Little Caesars squad. They have been a powerhouse for over 10 years now. Third baseman Linda Mueller is in her 11th year. She is one of only 4 women inducted into the USSSA Hall of Fame. By her 500th game, she had already passed 1000 hits and she passed the 1500 hit mark this season. First Basemen Jackie Huggins is a 4-time All World Player.

Shortstop Patti Silya was a child prodigy who broke into Class – A softball at the age of 13. She was the MVP last year as she hit a record 9 home runs for a Womens’ World Series. eleven year veteran Dottie Davis is the only remaining member of the original team from 1969.

And to a player, Al Campbell is the greatest coach in USSSA Women’s Softball History. The team was sponsored by Beaumont Hospital and finished second in its first world series in 1974. Little Caesars took over the following year.

1984 ASA Women’s Major Fast Pitch Nationals

1984 held at Buffalo, New York.

Champion – Los Angeles Diamond Blazers, Los Angeles, California (34-9)
Runner Up – Raybestos Brakettes, Stratford, Connecticut (64-8)

The Diamonds went undefeated (6-0) during the tournament. They beat Brakettes 1-0 in winner’s bracket finals on a Van Wyck shutout. Sue Lewis scored the only run of the game in the top of the first of losing pitcher Kathy Arendsen (2-2). The Brakettes then eliminated the Majestics 2-0 in the losers bracket final. Barb Reinalda (3-0) hurled the shutout. Tracey Compton then took the hill for the Diamonds in the Final and pitched a 1-0 shutout, defeating the Brakettes and Kathy Arendson (both of her losses in this tournament were by 1-0 scores and she gave up only 3 hits in both games). It was the first time the Brakettes had been shutout twice in the same tournament since going back to 1970, when Orange Lionettes turned the trick. Once again, Sue Lewis was the hero as she legged out an infield single allowing Debbie Langevain to score in the fifth inning with the game’s only run. The Brakettes finished 5-2. Diane Schumacher delivered the game winning RBI in 3 of the first 4 Brakettes wins.

1984 ASA Men’s Super Slow Pitch Nationals

1984 held at Burlington, North Carolina.

Champion – Howard’s/Western Steer, Denver, North Carolina (104-40)
Runner Up – Jerry’s Caterers, Miami, Florida (61-25)

Howard’s/Western Steer went 0-4 in the round robin, defeated Elite Coatings (2-2), then defeated number one seed Jerry’s Catering (4-0) in the winners bracket final.

Jerry’s then eliminated Elite Coatings to get another crack at the Howard’s/Western Steer squad.  Jerry’s won going away 51-27 to force the “if” game.

The game was not a contest as the defending champs won 45-12 over Jerry’s to retain their ASA Super National title.

Clyde Guy was 7-7 with 6 HR and 10 RBI in that final game. MVP Rick Scherr, Ed Roth, Stan Harvey and Ricky Huggins all hit 4 HR in the game. Rick Scherr hit 20 HR in the tournament and counting his Intentional Walks, his on base percentage was .846 (39-46).

Bruce Meade was 31-40 to win the batting title with a .775 average, just edging out Scherr, who batted .774.
