2007 ASA Women’s Major Fast Pitch Nationals

2007 held at Stratford, Connecticut.

Champion – Stratford Brakettes, Stratford, Connecticut (56-5)
Runner Up – Southern California Sliders, Yorba Linda, California

The format of the tournament changed to pool play with teams being seeded into a double elimination bracket.

Tournament never completed, Brakettes and Sliders were both 2-0 and in the winners bracket finals, Brakettes were leading Sliders 2-0 in winners bracket final when rain washed away the game and remainder of the tournament. By virtue of fewest runs allowed in Winners Bracket (9-1, 4-0 for a total of 1 run allowed), Brakettes were awarded the Championship and Sliders second (3-1, 7-3 for a total of 4 runs allowed). Katie Burkhart of the Brakettes (2-0, 7 IP, shutout, 12 K) was pitching the last game when the rains came. She had her team up 2-0 in the 3rd giving up 1 hit and already struck out 5. Leslie Malerich (1-0) won the other game for the Brakettes as they finished 4-0. In the losers bracket final, the Carbondale Cougars and the So Cal Hurricanes game had just started before it was washed out.

2007 ASA Women’s Open Slow Pitch Nationals

2007 held at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Champion: Armed Forces, Washington, D.C.
Runner Up: Juice, Houston, Texas

The 2007 ASA Women’s Open Slow Pitch National Championship had a patriotic feel as the red, white and blue of the All Armed Forces team captured the championship. After Juice of Houston, Texas, forced the if necessary game by beating the Armed Forces 19-2 in the first championship game, the Armed Force rebounded in the final “if” game to win 13-7. Shannika Taylor of Fort Huachuca, AZ, was named the tournament MVP for Armed Forces. The Armed Forces all played tremendous softball to over shadow an incredible hitting performance by Juice’s Christan Dowling, who hit some of the longest balls ever hit by a Woman softball player.

  • MVP – Shannika Taylor, Armed Forces (9-17, .529, HR, 12 RBI)
  • Batting Leader – Christan Dowling, Juice (14-19, 3 HR, 13 RBI) – .737

2006 NCAA Women’s College World Series

2006 held at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on June 1-6.

Champion – Arizona Wildcats (54-11)
Runner Up – Northwestern Wildcats (50-15)

The University of Arizona Softball program claimed its eighth NCAA championship title in Program history and finished a 50-14-1 season by taking two games out of three from Tennessee at the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City in May of 2007.

The road to the title was not easy, as the Wildcats played five elimination games and eight total contests over the course of seven days. The U of A rode the arm of pitcher Taryne Mowatt, who was named the Women’s College World Series Most Outstanding Player, for a record 60 innings.

Arizona used a huge fifth inning in the final game to secure their place in history. The Wildcats beat Tennessee that night 5-0. The Cats had dropped the opening game to the Vols earlier in the week and then stormed back with a 1-0 victory in the second game.

Senior Outfielder Caitlin Lowe Struck her third of four hits to lead off the fifth inning, starting the game-winning rally.

Freshman K’Lee Arrendondo followed with a single and Tennessee intentionally walked senior Kristie Fox to load the bases.

Sophomore third baseman Jenae Leles singled the first pitch up the middle to drive in two runs. That brought up senior second baseman Chelsie Mesa, who drilled a home run to right field to give the Wildcats a huge Cushion.
