1956 ASA Men’s Open Slow Pitch Nationals

1956 held at League Park in Cleveland, Ohio on September 3-5.

Champion – Gatliff Auto Sales, Newport, Kentucky (34-3)
Runner Up – Lang’s Pet Shop, Covington, Kentucky (30-3)

Gatliff Auto beat West End Merchants from Jefferson County (Louisville Area) Kentucky 5-0 in the winners bracket final behind the shutout pitching of Vern Roberts. Defending champ Lang’s Pet Shop lost it’s first game to Pittsburgh’s Dormont Boosters 5-4 and stormed through the losers bracket winning 6 straight games then eliminating the West End Merchants of Jefferson County-Louisville, KY 9-6 for their seventh straight win and advanced to the finals.

Malio Valvano pitched all the games for Langs. They had to defeat Gatliff’s twice to win the title. Gatliff’s pitcher Vern Roberts made sure that didn’t happen as Gatliff’s dethroned Lang’s 2-1 in the Championship game. Vern Roberts helped his cause getting a hit and scoring a run.

Lou Smith had a big sac fly for Gatliff’s to score Gene Dittoe and Bill Bieger chipped in with 2 hits.

For Lang’s, Earl Berryman and Bo Stuntbeck both had doubles, with Berryman scoring the only run for Langs. Vern Roberts had 2 shutouts and surrendered only 17 runs in 5 games. Gatliff finished the season with only 3 defeats the entire year, all to Lang’s.

1955 held at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Champion – Lang’s Pet Shop, Covington, Kentucky
Runner Up – Tresler’s Comets, Cincinnati, Ohio

Lang’s Pet Shop defeated Tresler’s Comets 6-1 in the winners bracket final and watched as the Comets beat Rhodes-Garden Club of Pennsylvania 11-5. Rhodes had previously eliminated last year’s champ, Waldeck’s Tavern by a 13-6 score.

Tresler’s Comets then eliminated Rhodes-Garden 5-1 to get another crack at Lang’s. The Comets defeated Lang’s 7-6 behind the big bat of Jack Carmichael and then forced another game.

Lang’s prevailed in the final championship game 19-13. Paul Zembrodt was 3-4 with a triple, 2 HR and 5 RBI for Lang’s. Ralph Bo Stuntebeck, Jack Nie and Gene Dittoe (2B, 3B, HR, 3 RBI), also collected 3 hits apiece. Bill Zeigler smacked a 3-run homer to chip in for Lang’s. Ed Reuter (HR, 4 RBI) and Art Merten (3B, 3 RBI) led Tresler’s with 3 hits each. Jack Carmichael added 2 more hits, including a double and 2 RBI to complete an outstanding tournament performance. Lang’s pitcher Tom Infield won 5 straight including the winner’s bracket final giving up only 9 runs, he hurled 3 consecutive 1-Run games to the King Seat.

Tresler’s Comets played in the same league as Shield’s Realty, Waldeck’s Tavern, and the Cincinnati Firefighters.

1954 ASA Men’s Open Slow Pitch Nationals

1954 held at Bonneycastle Field and Brown & Williamson Field in Louisville, Kentucky on September 4-6.

Champion – Waldeck’s Tavern, Cincinnati, Ohio
Runner Up – National Fruit Merchants, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Waldeck’s Tavern won 6 straight games to capture the title, outscoring their opponents 82-36 along the way. They defeated Peerless Woolens of Georgia 32-7 in the winners bracket final behind the hitting of Jerry Huber, Fred Heimkreiter and John Drees, all of which had five hits. Drees getting a couple homers. Waldeck’s collected 38 hits in the contest. Waldeck’s then sat back and waited as last years runner-up, Pittsburgh National Fruit eliminated defending champs, Shields Contractors 5-4 and then disposed of Peerless Woolens 15-11 in the losers bracket final to get back to the finals. Waldeck’s Tavern proved to be too strong as it won final 13-7 hitting 8 HR, John Drees went 4 for 4 and hit 4 straight homers while Frank Hiemkrieter, Jim Trainor, Bob Trainor, and Frank Kramer each had 1 to back the pitching of Malio Valvano (Valvano surrendered only 31 runs in 6 games for Waldeck). Drees ended the tournament getting 9 straight hits, including 6 HR. Pittsburgh pitcher Tony Bova had 2 home runs in a losing cause for the Fruit Merchants. Mike Sabbio and Bruce Gilbert also hit HR for Pittsburgh. James Caldwell of Shields went 13-18 to lead the tournament in hitting. Ralph Bo Stuntebeck, delayed due to work commitments, only played the last two games for Shields, yet still made the All Tournament team as he went 6-9 with 3 HR and 2 doubles. Donnie Key of the Louisville Stars started the tournament with 8 straight hits, before going 2-4 with 2 HR in the third game.

Some sources say the MVP would have been Waldeck’s pitcher, Malio Valvano, pitching Waldeck’s to the title.

The NASL and the APSPL merged leagues after the 1980 season and formed a new league called the United Professional Softball League (UPSL).  Many of the NASL and APSPL teams joined in the re-formation of the new league.  Many teams also disbanded operations and some new teams were formed in previous cities where the APSPL and NASL once existed

ASA Softball Hall of Fame

National Softball Hall of Fame Link

Established in 1957 by the Amateur Softball Association (ASA), the National Softball Hall of Fame and Museum is a permanent shrine to the men and women who played the game so well.

The present facility was officially dedicated May 26, 1973 and has since had two additions. The L-shaped, bi-level building houses more than 18,000 square feet of fascinating memorabilia. Photos of national champions, slow pitch and fast pitch records, uniforms of the past and present, action photographs, player profiles, trophies and plaques . . . the history of softball literally unfolds right before your eyes as you walk through the Softball Hall of Fame.

It is also an educational walk as you get a quick lesson on how bats, balls and gloves are made and see equipment from the turn of the century to the present. You can also test your knowledge of the game by participating in one of the question-and-answer game boards displayed in the museum.

Or you can take a brief rest and lean back on one of the authentic bleachers at the miniature ball field and watch softball videos on a television monitor. Each year thousands of visitors from all over the world visit the museum to pay homage to such softball immortals as Harold (Shifty) Gears, the first person inducted into the National Softball Hall of Fame; Bertha Tickey, who won 757 games during her career; Don Rardin, one of two people to play on a championship team in both open slow pitch and industrial slow pitch divisions; Joan Joyce, who was named to 18 All-America teams, and Sam Elliott, who won 1,133 games and lost only 87 in 21 years.

Other areas of interest include the Hall of Honor, established in 1976 to acknowledge contributions of non-players in five areas, international exhibits, the men and women in blue, and the State and Metro Halls of Fame honoring players, coaches, managers, sponsors, umpires, commissioners and administrators at the state and metro level.

Be sure to drop by the ASA Research Center and Library to find answers to such questions as “What’s a fungo bat?” and to browse through various softball publications including back copies of the ASA Guide, Rule Book and Umpire Manual plus the official publication of the ASA, USA Softball Magazine (formerly Balls & Strikes Softball), Doctoral dissertations, master’s theses, magazine articles, video cassettes and numerous books and souvenir programs concerning all aspects of America’s Game are also available for reading in the museum library.

A must to see while visiting the museum is the newest exhibit at the National Softball Hall of Fame-the Olympic Gallery.

“With softball now an Olympic sport, it was appropriate to have a room to display the memorabilia and chronicle softball’s long road to Olympic recognition,” said Don Porter, executive director of the ASA.

The room features four-color murals depicting softball’s road to the Olympics along with action pictures of outstanding USA Softball National Team players. In addition, the room includes a 60-inch screen TV and park benches for casual viewing of important Olympic-style events, including the 1994 World Championship in which the USA Softball Women’s National Team captured the gold.

“The opening of the Olympic Gallery is certainly a milestone in the history of softball,” Porter said.

Open year round on weekdays and on weekends from mid-March to October, the Hall of Fame also houses the headquarters of the Amateur Softball Association-USA Softball, the national governing body of amateur softball in the United States.

After losing to two-time defending champ, Skip Athletic Club 13-5 in their first game and then a rain delay in which more then 2 inches of rain fell, County Sports won 10 straight games the last 31 hours to reach the finals.

Michael’s Lounge, behind MVP Mike Axelson, beat Swing Inn of Cleveland 20-4 in the winner’s bracket finals and then sat back as County Sports beat Cleveland’s Swing Inn in a 18-17 slug fest behind the home run heroics of Jim Galloway.

In less than ideal conditions, Big Jim Galloway (11 HR) and pitcher Bill Brown (.690 batting average) led County Sports, who scored 174 runs and gave up 87 runs in that span, all the way back to the finals. All total, they scored 179 runs and hit 41 HR.

All those game took its toll on the Long Islanders as Michael’s Lounge defeated them 10-0 in the championship. Michael’s had 14 hits to County Sports. MVP Mike Axelson went 5-5 with 3 HR in the Championship game to lead Michael’s.

The following information was gleaned from a  book, The Zollner Piston Story by Rodger Nelson. This book was published in 1995 by the Allen County Public Library Foundation of Fort Wayne, IN. The writer Nelson, was publicity director and assistant A.D. of the Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons, 1947-54. The NISL was in existence in 1944-45. The East teams included Singer Sewing Machine, Elizabeth, NJ; Grumman Aircraft Company, Bethpage, NY; Phelps-Dodge Company, Elizabeth, NJ; Walter Kidde Company, Belleville, NJ. The West teams were Zollner Pistons, Fort Wayne, IN; Hudson Motors, Detroit, MI; Weldon Tool Company, Cleveland, OH; Briggs Mfg. Company, Detroit, MI; Jack & Heintz Company, Cleveland, OH;  Peereless Company, Rossville, GA. The NSL was in existence from 1946 thru 1948. The name was then changed to the National Fastball League (NFL) from 1949 until disbanding after the 1954 season. From 1946 thru the 1949 season the NSL/NFL declared a champion thru league play (1946) or a “best of seven” series of games (1947 thru 1949) This of course was after the regular season of league play had concluded. The NSL/NFL champion then played a best of seven “World Series” against another strong league, the American Softball League, based in the eastern part of the country. Some of the teams in the NSL/NFL were the Zollner  Pistons of Ft. Wayne-IN, Briggs Beautyware of Detroit-MI, Dow Chemical of Midland-MI, 720 Athletic Club from Columbus-OH, Joe Louis Punchers of Flint-MI and Dayfus Roofing from Windsor-Ontario, Canada. These teams when divided played in the East Division. Teams that played in the West Division include Metal Parts Corporation of Racine-WI, State Farm Insurance of Bloomington-MI, The Merchants of  Aurora-IL (they eventually became the Aurora Sealmasters), Slater Pen of Iowa City-IA, Pilots of Waukegan-IL, Rockets of Rock Island-IL and an unknown team name from Milwaukee-WI. The league didn’t always use the divisional format as noted below. Sometimes the regular season standings decided the championship and sometimes they used a one divisional format with a playoff system to determine the championship game contestants.

* The 1953 NFL championship was not declared until 1954. In the 1953 playoff, Detroit Briggs defeated Zollner Pistons 7-1 in the first game of a best of three. Pistons defeated Briggs 7-0 in the 2nd game. At this point play was suspended as Detroit had qualified to play in the ASA World Tournament & it was agreed that the teams would meet in Fort Wayne at the start of the 1954 season and play the final and deciding game. On May 29, 1954 a four games series was held in which the 1st game would decide who was the 1953 NFL champion. Detroit bested the Pistons, 2-1 and were the 1953 NFL champs. Detroit had started the series as Briggs, won an ASA World Championship and then prior to game three had changed their name to Bombers!  A small consolation,  the Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons won  the next three exhibition games that weekend.

International Women’s Pro Softball Association (IWPSA) 1976-80

The International Women’s Professional Softball Association (IWPSA) was founded in 1976 by former LPGA Tour member Janie Blaylock, softball legend Joan Joyce and tennis icon Billie Jean King. The original league featured 10 teams from cities across the nation, including Connecticut Falcons, Buffalo Bisons, Chicago Ravens,  Michigan Travelers and Pennsylvania Liberties in the Eastern Division. The Western Division was made up from the San Diego Sandpipers, San Jose Sunbirds, Santa Ana Lionettes, Southern California Gems and the Phoenix/Arizona Bird. The Bird started out as the Phoenix Bird then changed their name to the Arizona Bird midway through the season. The St. Louis Hummers joined the league in 1977 along with the Bakersfield Aggies.  The other  two team expansion teams were the Edmonton Snowbirds and the New York Golden Apples. In the IWPSA’s first season, each team played a 120 game schedule that featured 60 double headers. Player contracts ranged from $1,000 to $3,000 per year. The fledgling association survived four seasons (including be sponsored by BIC International for the 1979 season) before lack of funds, high travel costs and inadequate facilities ultimately led to its demise. The following decade proved to be extremely prosperous for the sport of fastpitch  softball in the United States despite the absence of a professional league. I’d like to personally thank Robert Swisko, who did much of the research o fins this information. He sent the stuff to me and ask me to use it as I see fit.
