1983 USSSA Men’s Major Slow Pitch World Series

1983 held at Greensboro, North Carolina.

Champion – Jerry’s Caterers, Miami, Florida
Runner Up – Steele’s Sports, Grafton, Ohio

Led by Bruce Meade, Jerry’s Caterers beat an upstart Steele’s Sports in the final. Jerry’s came through the losers bracket and beat Steele’s twice in the finals. The top 5 hitters on Jerry’s (Meade, Harold Kelley, Denny Jones, Mike Bowlin and Mike Cellura) totaled 64 home runs during the tournament. That was more then most teams hit total.

Don Arndt was 11-13 with an .846 average to lead all hitters, but was 2 at bats short from the minimum of 15 to qualify for the title.

Dennis Myers of J&R Roofing and Mike Parrot of Garret’s Raiders were both in the same boat as they both went 10-12 (.833).

This makes what Bruce Meade did that much more impressive as he shattered the USSSA HR record for a single World Series with 18.

Jerry’s beat Steeles 25-20 on Meade’s 4-5, 3 HR performance in the first final and then won the title going away 26-12 as Meade once again was 4-5 with 3 more HRs. Doug Brown and Mike Cellura also hit 3 homers in that game.

Here is something that will tell you why Meade was the MVP. On the last day of the tournament, Bruce Meade was 17-19 with 14 HRs.

1982 NCAA Women’s College World Series

1982 held at Seymour Smith Park in Omaha, Nebraska on May 27-30.

16 Division I college softball teams met in the NCAA tournament’s first round at campus sites. After having played their way through the regular season and first round (and for Oklahoma State, a conference tournament, an AIAW regional title and double losses to Texas A&M in the AIAW Women’s College World Series final on May 25), the eight advancing teams played in the NCAA Women’s College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.

The championship game went 8 innings with winning pitcher Debbie Doom pitching all eight innings. Doom spread out 2 hits over the eight innings and struck out 12.

Wende Ward of Fresno State went all 8 innings as well giving up 1 earned run and striking out 8.

From softball historian Bill Plummer III – With their 77-8 season record, Texas A&M could have been a contender in Omaha − maybe even the top seed − against perennial softball powers like UCLA and Fresno State. The Aggies had been invited to the NCAA’s first national tournament, but chose not to go. A&M coach Bob Brock had high respect for the eleven-year-old AIAW, even as the NCAA began to overshadow it. Out of a sense of loyalty to the AIAW, Brock said, his school chose the 1982 Norman championship over the NCAA’s first in Omaha.

From the NCAA – The 1982 NCAA Division I Women’s College Softball World Series will be held in Omaha May 27-30, officials announced Thursday.

The event will be the first championship softball tournament sponsored by the NCAA and will be held the week before the start of the NCAA College Baseball World Series, which Omaha has hosted the past 33 years.

‘The NCAA is happy to be coming to Omaha for our first softball championship tournament,’ said Cindy Smith, NCAA assistant director for women’s championships. ‘There is no better place than Omaha, which has treated softball so well in the past.’

Heading the organization in Omaha will be Mary Higgins, Creighton University women’s athletic director; Bob Astelford, city parks and recreation director; and Bob Gibson, city recreational coordinator.

Ms. Higgins also chairs the NCAA softball committee and is the Creighton softball coach.

Gibson said work is under way to renovate the outfield at Seymour Smith Softball Complex, which will be the home of the 1982 series.

‘We feel that, without a doubt, this is the finest softball complex in the universe,’ he said.

Teams will qualify for the series through regional play, with the eight regional champions advancing to the double-elimination tournament.

The University of Nebraska-Omaha hosted the original College Softball World Series sponsored by the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women. When the AIAW split the top two divisions, the Division I tournament was moved from Omaha. UNO hosted the Division II competition last year.

In the Championship game, the Lady Comets fell behind 2-0 before a second inning outburst sent 12 batters to the plate scoring 8 runs, capped by long home runs by Martha Litz and Stephanie Hines, the Comets rolled to a 10-6 championship game win. Earlier, the Lady Comets defeated the Cincinnati girls 11-10 in the winners bracket final. Hines hit 2 HRs in that game, while Litz hit one also. 1982 ASA Men’s A Slow Pitch Nationals

1982 held at Glenpool, Oklahoma on September 3-6.

Champion – Lawson Auto Parts, Altamonte Springs, Florida (96-18)
Runner Up – U.S. Armed Forces, Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania (32-2)

Lawson Auto Parts beat the US Armed Forces 19-5 in the winners bracket final. Then the Armed Forces faced the third placed finisher Gregg Security (the Metro Pittsburgh champs) in the loser’s bracket final and won 17-9. The Armed Forces squared off against Lawson Auto Parts again and beat them soundly 24-9, setting up a championship title. The Armed Forces couldn’t beat the champs two straight, falling 28-11.

Samuel Bender of Lawson was named the tourney’s Most Valuable Player, clouting 10 home runs that Posey said traveled “out of sight.” Gurney Holley of the Armed Forces team hit eight round-trippers and teammates Joe Firova and Mike Norman had seven each.

Orlando’s Lawson Auto Parts walked away with the National ASA Men’s Class A Slow Pitch tournament in Tulsa, Oklahoma pounding the Armed Forces 28-11 in the finals.

A 15-run seventh inning, highlighted by a 3-run homer by Calvin Lingelbach, put the game out of reach. Armed Forces gave Lawson its first loss in the double-elimination tournament earlier in the day, 24-10, forcing a third game for the championship. Lawson opened the day with a 19-5 victory over the Armed Forces, their first loss.

“This was a goal we set at the beginning of the year, and it was an incredible goal,” said Lawson manager John Emerson. “We got here through a lot of determination and talent from the whole team. It was a great team effort, and we had a good sponsor.”

All the way back to Memorial Day weekend, it was obvious Lawson Auto Parts was a good softball team when they won the gigantic Richmond Round Robin.

It was inevitable that Lawson would be one of the six or seven teams expected to compete for the ASA Men’s Class A slowpitch National Tournament title. They got to the finals, sputtered for a 24-10 loss to the Armed Forces, then dominated the Armed Forces 28-11 in the championship game.

Ironically enough, it was Lawson Auto’s 100th win of the season against 17 losses. Not bad for a team which had only one player on a team with any previous National Tournament playing exposure.

Lawson got into the finals by topping Deep South Trophies of West Monroe, LA., 30-8, Lingburgs Old South Coors of Saltillo, Miss., 16-6, Mecca Tavern of Auburn, Wash., 12-10, Seaside Memorial of Corpus Christi, Tex., 14-13, Central Ohio Welding of Reynoldsburg, Ohio 15-6 and Armed Forces 19-5 in the winner’s bracket finals.

Gregg Security of Pittsburgh, Pa., finished third. They earned every step, losing to Lansing Auto Glass of Hammond, Ind., 12-5 in the first game, and winning eight games. Armed Forces finally stopped Gregg 17-9. Gregg had beaten Coors, Vandergriffs of Arlington, Tex., 14-6, Mecca 4-3, S.S. Jakes of Colfax, Wis., 23-3, Armstrong Electric of Forest, Va., 11-7, Adams & Leonard of Tulsa, Okla., 11-4, Central Ohio 7-6 and Lansing 10-2.

Lansing, which was fourth, had its own string going in the loser’s bracket, taking six wins. They stopped Zipp-Fans of Indianapolis, Ind., 9-2 in the loser’s bracket, stopping Zipp-Fan’s five-game winning streak.

Samuel Bender of Lawson Auto Parts took home Most Valuable Player and most home runs award, with 10. Dave Pishker of Lansing Auto Glass (24 of 34) won the hitting trophy, with a .706 average. Gene Cirelli of Gregg Security was voted top pitcher.

1982 ASA Men’s Super Slow Pitch Nationals

1982 held at Burlington, North Carolina.

Champion – Jerry’s Caterers, Miami, Florida (93-13)
Runner Up – Howard’s/Western Steer, Denver, North Carolina (143-24)

This championship was a long time coming for Jerry’s Caterers of Miami, FL.  After Jerry’s won their first game over Mann’s-Vada of Atlanta 10-2 with Bruce Meade going 3-4, they ran into trouble in their second game losing to defending champ, Howard’s/Western Steer 16-11.

Dick Bartell had 2 HR and 5 RBI to lead Howards. Meade was 3-4 again. But this put Jerry’s in the loser’s bracket.  York Barbell/Ken Sanders won two straight in the winner’s bracket 19-9 and 18-17.

Charles Wright (3 HR in 19-9 game) and Craig Elliott (3 HR in 18-17 game) led the offense for the York/Sanders crew.

Howard’s won two more in the winner’s bracket as Rick Scherr broke the all-time single season HR record set by Mighty Joe Young, playing for Steele’s Sports in 1980. Scherr hit number 338 to pass Young.  Rick Scherr and Stan Harvey combined for 7 HR and 14 RBI against York-Sanders to win the winners bracket final 33-8.

Meanwhile, defending Major Class Champion, Elite Coatings led by Cecil Whitehead won its second straight as well as Whitehead was 5-6 with 5 RBIs for Elite Coatings in its opening game victory.

Jerry’s started its run through the loser’s bracket by beating Copher Brothers 9-6 and Garrett & Houck 15-7. Jerry’s Mike Bolen had 6 RBI in that last game. After eliminating Elite Coatings 47-13 (Meade was 8-8 in that game and Harold Kelly had 2 HR and 6 RBI in one inning) and York Barbell/Ken Sanders 26-19, Jerry’s had to defeat the might Howard’s squad two straight games.

Bruce Meade was a one-man wrecking crew as he led Jerry’s to a 25-11 win in the first final as he clubbed 3 HR and collected 7 RBI.

Then in the Final Championship Game, Jerry’s defeated Howards 10-8 to capture the ASA Super National Championship.  Meade was 2-3 in that last game with a double and a single.

1982 ASA Women’s Major Fast Pitch Nationals

1982 held at Binghamton, New York.

Champion – Raybestos Brakettes, Stratford, Connecticut (62-4)
Runner Up – Sun City Saints, Sun City, Arizona (57-15)

The Raybestos Brakettes won their 17th ASA National Championship. Kathy Arendsen finished the season with a 32-3 record.

Debbie Doom started the first final and went 4 innings and came out with the score tied 0-0.

Michele Thomas finished the game and was the winning pitcher as the Saints scored a run off losing Pitcher Barbara Reinalda to win 1-0.

Martha Rau was 2-3 in the game.

In the final Championship game, the Saints went with the same pitching plan, start Doom, then bring in Thomas.

Kathy Arendsen started for the Brakettes. She did what she does best, come through in the clutch as she pitched a no hitter and struck out 10 batters to clinch the title for the Brakettes.

The Doom and Thomas duo wasn’t as effective this time as each gave up a run in the 2-0 final.
