Rising Sun Hotel “Sunners” from Reading, rallied from 2 runs down in the bottom of the 7th inning of the championship game to defeat a strong Aurora squad 4-3. Reading went through the tournament undefeated (6-0) to capture its first National Championship. MVP Ty Stofflett pitched every single inning for his team (53 innings) and struck out 88 batters.

Ray Truluck of the Bombers hit a 2-run homer in the 4th inning to give winning Pitcher Bobby Quinn all the support he would need as the Bombers cruised to a 4-1 victory to win the Championship. The Barons defeated Clearwater earlier to force the final championship. The home run chased starter Guy French and brought on Rich Hull to pitch for Sunnyvale. Hull defeated the Bombers in the first final.

1971 ASA Men’s Major Fast Pitch Nationals

1971 held at Meador Park in Springfield, Missouri on September 10-18.


Champion – Welty Way, Cedar Rapids, Iowa
Runner Up – Raybestos Cardinals, Stratford, Connecticut


A four-run fourth inning and, Jerry Ralfs’ five-hitter Sunday gave Welty Way a 4-3 decision over the Raybestos Cardinals in the finals of the Amateur Softball Association Nationals tournament.

The big blow for the Iowa ASA champions was a three run home run by Mike Pallesen. Roger Aceto’s infield hit the first of the game for Welty Way and a walk to Ed White preceded the homer.

Gary Morow’s infield hit later in the inning sent home what proved to be the winning run. A walk and John Muench’s single get up what proved to be the winning run.

Raybestos Cardinals, seeking its third straight title, collected five hits off veteran Ralfs who also struck out six. Three errors helped Stratford to three runs in the sixth.

Clearwater Bombers won 62 consecutive games during the regular season.

Raybestos Cardinals announced after the tournament that they were disbanding, even though they would form a team again in 1972. They notified the players via a letter to the players.

A single to right field by second baseman George Goodchild who was returning to action after a six week layoff because of a broken arm, produced the deciding run as the Raybestos Cardinals annexed the national men’s softball championship for the second straight year with a 3-2 victory over Nothdurft Tool in Jack Russell Stadium.

Left fielder Al Yaeger set the stage for the tie breaking socre in the tournament finale when he singled with one out in the decisive sixth inning. After Don Benedict broke for second base with a 1-0 count on Goodchild and moved up to third on a while pitch by Nothdurft Tool’s pitching ace Bonnie Jones for his game winning hit.

1969 held at Springfield, Missouri.

Dick Norenburg of the Raybestos Cardinals pitched a 7-0 shutout in final championship game. The final game was forced after Roy Burlison of Mountain View won his 7th straight game to grab a 4-3 decision. But Burlison finally tired and was beaten in the final game. Dick Norenburg, an imposing figure at 6 foot 8 inches tall, led the Raybestos pitching staff as they alternated pitchers and kept everyone fresh. Norenburg was 2-0, Al Lewis was 1-0, Pete Carlson was 1-0 and Metro Szeryk was 1-1 with 26 K in 13 innings pitched.

Weldon Haney pitched the greatest game of his career as he hurled a 1-0 perfect game to win the championship for the Clearwater Bombers over the Oxnard Kings of California. He also defeated the Kings 3-0 in the winner’s bracket finals. Haney was a one man show as he had 2 of the Bombers 3 hits in the final and scored the games only run. The Bombers went through this tournament without surrendering a single run.

Eddie King pitched the game for the Bombers and gave up 5 hits and struck out 7. Bobby Quinn pitched for the Engineers and gave up 4 hits and also struck out 7. Quinn also hit a double that drove in one of the two Providence runs. Abe Baker drove in the other run.  For the Bombers, Weldon Haney hit a home run for the Bombers. This championship for the Bombers was the 8th one in their storied history. This is the most in ASA History.
