2011 NCAA Women’s College World Series

2011 held at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on June 2-7.

Champion – Arizona State Sun Devils (60-6)
Runner Up – Florida Gators (56-13)

Only three times in 29 years before Tuesday night had a freshman been the winning pitcher in the deciding game of the Women’s College World Series.

UCLA’s Heather Compton accomplished the feat in 1990, and a year earlier it was UCLA’s Tiffany Boyd. The Bruins’ legendary Debbie Doom did the same in 1982.

Now, Arizona State’s Dallas Escobedo has added her name to the list.

The Sun Devil freshman didn’t lose a game at the WCWS, culminating with a 7-2 victory over Florida to finish off a 2-0 sweep of the championship series Tuesday night at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium for ASU’s second national championship in four years.

“It’s just a whole bunch of emotions right now,” said Escobedo, who allowed four hits and five walks with five strikeouts to improve to 37-3 on the season. “We worked so hard. I just came in here and had total confidence in my pitches.”

Escobedo said she was sore before the game and had to be stretched by the team trainer between each inning, but after giving up a first-inning run, she only surrendered one more hit until the Gators tacked on a meaningless run in the seventh inning.

“She’s not a freshman anymore,” coach Clint Myers said. “She is a seasoned veteran and there are no surprises. From this point on, she’s just going to grow with leaps and bounds as far as how good she can be.”

Escobedo meshed well as the central figure on a team with eight seniors, many of whom had been crucial players over the last four seasons. She blended quickly and added dominant pitching to a team that already had some of the best hitters and defenders in the country.

“Coming in here and just working hard and taking in what they had to say — they’ve been here, they know, they won a national championship,” Escobedo said. “Listening to what they had to say, and following and trusting in them made me how I am today.”

The Sun Devils’ offensive and defensive capabilities only made Escobedo stronger, and when she was handed the co-Most Outstanding Player award — which she shared with Florida’s Michelle Moultrie — she knew she owed a piece of it to the rest of the players as well.

“Those are the things she thrives on, because it gives her that sense of confidence that she can go out there and throw strikes, make them hit it, and they’re gonna make the plays (in the field),” Myers said.

“You saw a poised pitcher out there tonight. There’s a reason why it took 20 years for a freshman to lead a club to a national championship — because it’s such a rarity. It just doesn’t happen. Only a unique, special type of person can have that.”

2010 NCAA Women’s College World Series

2010 held at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on June 3 – June 8.

Champion – UCLA Bruins (50-11)
Runner Up – Arizona Wildcats (52-14)

The Bruins set numerous school and Women’s College World Series records en route to their 12th national title and 11th NCAA championship. After steamrolling through Regionals and Super Regionals with a 5-0 record, UCLA won all five games in Oklahoma City.

The WCWS run began with a 16-3 demolition of Florida, which marked the most runs scored in any UCLA postseason game. Consecutive 5-2 victories over Hawai’i and Georgia pushed the Bruins to the WCWS Championship Series, where they faced longtime rival Arizona.

Game one of the finals was an instant classic, as the game featured six ties and lead changes. Trailing 5-4 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Dani Yudin reached second following a miscommunication in the Arizona outfield and Kaila Shull drove in the game-tying run with another double to send it into extra innings.

Megan Langenfeld, who was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, then hit a walk-off homer with two outs in the eighth to give the Bruins the win.

The Bruins finished off the Wildcats the following night, behind four home runs, to post a 15-9 victory.

UCLA hit a WCWS-record 14 home runs, including a record four by both Langenfeld and Andrea Harrison.

Harrison, who set the record for most RBI in one WCWS with 11, was joined on the All-Tournament Team by Samantha Camuso.

As a team, the Bruins set single-season marks for home runs (108), slugging percentage (.602), on base percentage (.432) and walks (244).

The Pac-10 has won 21 of the 27 Women’s College World Series titles, with Arizona State and Washington joining powerhouses UCLA (11 championships) and Arizona (eight) the past two years.

National player of the year Danielle Lawrie (42-8) shut out the top-seeded Gators (63-5) the rest of the way to clinch the title with a two-game sweep. She pitched every inning of the Huskies’ six games at the World Series.

Florida’s Aja Paculba led off the game with a triple to right-center field past a diving Aly McWherter and scored on a passed ball. Kristina Hilbreth reached on an error, moved to second on Enea’s infield single and was able to sneak into third on a steal when Stuart was too far from the base to tag her. She scored on Bush’s sacrifice fly.

Washington answered immediately against Nelson, who led the nation in ERA but was coming off two of her worst outings of the season. Lawrie’s RBI single and a wild pitch that brought in Pohlman evened the score at 2.

With Lawrie and Canadian Olympic teammate Jenn Salling leading the way, the Huskies were right at home in Oklahoma City.

Lawrie settled down after some shaky defense put the third-seeded Huskies in a 2-0 hole. She finished with a pair of strikeouts after Christina Enea narrowly missed a tying home run with a line drive off the left field wall in the seventh inning.

2008 NCAA Women’s College World Series

2008 held at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on May 29 – June 3.

Champion – Arizona State Sun Devils (66-5)
Runner Up – Texas A&M Aggies (57-10)

the Arizona State Sun Devils softball team won their first NCAA softball championship, defeating Texas A&M 11-0 in one of the most lopsided title games in college softball history.

ASU was led by senior pitcher Katie Burkhart, who put together an incredible season, balancing a 41-5 record with an 0.75 ERA. Burkhart also threw two perfect games in 2008 and had 1,670 strikeouts over her four-year career.

As the 6th seed in the Women’s College World Series, ASU had to tangle with some impressive teams with loaded resumes, including the Alabama Crimson Tide and the UCLA Bruins. The Sun Devils cruised through the entire weekend with an undefeated 5-0 record, outscoring the competition 24-2 in a dominating display.

Kaitlin Cochran was another key contributor to that team, as her reputation as a prolific hitter preceded her. In 2008, she drew 29 intentional walks, a record. In the title game, Cochran hit a three-run home run and capped off her junior year with a .438 batting average.

2007 NCAA Women’s College World Series

2007 held at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on May 31 – June 6.

Champion – Arizona Wildcats (50-14-1)
Runner Up – Tennessee Volunteers (63-8)

Chelsie Mesa’s error in a loss to Tennessee Friday night/early Saturday morning put Arizona in the losers’ bracket.

The Wildcats’ senior second baseman more than vindicated herself.

Mesa provided the crushing blow in a 5-run fifth inning eruption off Tennessee star Monica Abbott to lead Arizona to a 5-0 win Wednesday night in front of 5,533 fans at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium.

It is Arizona’s eighth softball national title.

Arizona junior right-hander Taryne Mowatt was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. Mowatt pitched all 60 innings for the Wildcats, throwing 1,035 pitches. Mowatt allowed only four earned runs in eight games, striking out 79.

Similar to a 1-0, 10-inning loss Tuesday night, Tennessee had ample scoring opportunities but couldn’t score against Mowatt, 42-12. The Volunteers stranded 12 runners in Wednesday’s loss after leaving 14 runners on base in Tuesday’s loss.

The Wildcats rapped out 10 hits off Abbott, the national player of the year. The 5-run fifth was a startling turn around considering no team had scored against Abbott at the 2007 WCWS through 37 innings until Arizona finally pushed across a run in the 10th inning Tuesday night.

Five runs in the fifth was as many runs as Abbott had surrendered in her previous 90 innings.

All-American center fielder Caitlin Lowe, who was 4-for-4, ignited the 5-run explosion with a single that handcuffed Abbott. Jenae Leles busted up a pitchers’ duel with a two-run double. Mesa removed all doubt by slamming a three-run home run.

Beating Abbott once this season has been difficult. Beating the national player twice in as many nights is a major accomplishment. Abbott, 50-5, lost only two games the first three months.

2006 NCAA Women’s College World Series

2006 held at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on June 1-6.

Champion – Arizona Wildcats (54-11)
Runner Up – Northwestern Wildcats (50-15)

The University of Arizona Softball program claimed its eighth NCAA championship title in Program history and finished a 50-14-1 season by taking two games out of three from Tennessee at the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City in May of 2007.

The road to the title was not easy, as the Wildcats played five elimination games and eight total contests over the course of seven days. The U of A rode the arm of pitcher Taryne Mowatt, who was named the Women’s College World Series Most Outstanding Player, for a record 60 innings.

Arizona used a huge fifth inning in the final game to secure their place in history. The Wildcats beat Tennessee that night 5-0. The Cats had dropped the opening game to the Vols earlier in the week and then stormed back with a 1-0 victory in the second game.

Senior Outfielder Caitlin Lowe Struck her third of four hits to lead off the fifth inning, starting the game-winning rally.

Freshman K’Lee Arrendondo followed with a single and Tennessee intentionally walked senior Kristie Fox to load the bases.

Sophomore third baseman Jenae Leles singled the first pitch up the middle to drive in two runs. That brought up senior second baseman Chelsie Mesa, who drilled a home run to right field to give the Wildcats a huge Cushion.

2005 NCAA Women’s College World Series

2005 held at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on June 2-8.

Champion – Michigan Wolverines (65-7)
Runner Up – UCLA Bruins (40-20)

In 2005, the Wolverines won their first Women’s College World Series title in three games. Before being crowned champions, they lost the finals opener to defending national champion UCLA, 5-0.

Samantha Findlay a Wolverine freshman launched a three run home run in the top of the 11th to push Michigan ahead for good.

Afterward, coach Carol Hutchins analyzed her team’s performance. “We’re a better team than we showed; we’re trying too hard and we aren’t making adjustments. It’s a tough loss for us but we still have a chance, we’re not defeated and we’re still in it.”

Then-second baseman Tiffany Haas promised the team would come out playing higher-quality Michigan softball in game two. They did just that, beating the Bruins, 5-2.

Jessica Merchant and Becky Marx led the way offensively, each knocking in two runs after going a combined 0-for-5 in game one. Jennie Ritter earned the complete-game victory in the circle.

This year Super Regional were played. There were 16 regional tournaments with the winners heading to 8 super regional tournaments and then on to the WCWS.

2004 NCAA Women’s College World Series

2004 held at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on May 27-31.

Champion – UCLA Bruins (47-9)
Runner Up – California Golden Bears (53-13)

Bruins Go Back to Back for 10th Series Crown: UCLA’s Claire Sua homered and freshman Kristen Dedmon singled in two runs to lift the Bruins to their second straight Women’s College
World Series championship.

In a rematch of last year’s title game, UCLA downed California, 3-1, on Memorial Day in Oklahoma City, to collect its 10th NCAA crown. The Bruins became the first back-to-back champions since Arizona in 1996-97.

This was the 11th all-Pacific-10 Conference national championship final since 1991, the first year two Pac-10 teams appeared in the title game.

The Bears, who were making their third consecutive appearance in the championship game, opened the scoring in the top of the first inning. Lindsey James drew a walk from Bruins’ hurler Keira
Goerl and advanced to second on a Haley Woods single. Jessica Pamanian plated James on a one-hopper down the third base line that hit the bag and headed into left field to give California an early 1-0 lead.

Bears pitcher Kelly Anderson was perfect through four innings. She retired the first 12 UCLA batters she faced and recorded four strikeouts. Sua, the Bruins’ senior first baseman, swatted
Anderson’s first pitch of the fifth over the left center field fence to knot the game at 1-1. It was just Sua’s second hit of the Series, and only the 10th home run allowed by Anderson this year.

Anderson hit the next batter, Stephanie Ramos, and walked Jodie Legaspi before being relieved by Kristina Thorson. Baserunners Ramos and Legaspi also were exchanged for pinch runners Amanda Simpson and Tara Henry, who were bunted over by Emily Zaplatosch.

Dedmon, pinch hitting for Julie Hoshizaki in her only Series plate appearance, launched a shot up the middle that scored Simpson and Henry to break the tie and seal a 3-1 victory for the defending champs.

“Cal was an incredible opponent. I tip my cap to them,” said UCLA head coach Sue Enquist. “Keira (Goerl) did what she had to do to keep us in the ball game. I’m so extremely proud of this team
because they never stopped believing.”

Goerl, who no-hit California in last year’s championship game, allowed seven hits, struck out four and walked three in a complete-game effort. She closed the season at 31-7 and joins Arizona’s
Susie Parra (1993-94) and fellow Bruin Debbie Doom (1984-85) as the only pitchers to win backto-back championships.

With the losing effort, Anderson becomes the fourth pitcher in Women’s College World Series history to lose multiple title games. Anderson also fell short in last year’s championship matchup.

Diane Ninemire, head coach at California, said she was proud of the way the Bears opened the game.

“I thought that was a key thing for us to get a good start. Unfortunately, we fell behind, but my team kept fighting,” she said. “It was unfortunate that we did not get the key hit with people in scoring position. But I can’t be any prouder of this group of young ladies. They worked extremely hard throughout the year.”

The total attendance for this year’s Women’s College World Series topped out at 41,034 to break the previous mark of 38,102 established in 2001. The Bruins, who closed out the year at 47-9,
and the Bears, who finished at 53-13, played in front 5,735 fans, the second-largest crowd in Series championship-game history.

2003 NCAA Women’s College World Series

2003 held at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on May 22-25.

Champion – UCLA Bruins (54-7)
Runner Up – California Golden Bears (49-20)

In 2003 the NCAA bumped up the amount of teams in the championship tournament from 48 to 64 teams. There were eight regional sites with eight teams each and eight teams advancing to the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City.

The UCLA seniors were going to make school history one way or another May 26 in the championship game.

The four Bruins, playing in the final game of their career, either would become the first class in UCLA history not to win a title on the field or become the first team since Texas A&M in 1983 to
lose its first game of the tournament then rally for the title. Riding junior pitcher Keira Goerl’s no-hitter, the Bruins outlasted defending national champion California for a 1-0 victory.

2002 NCAA Women’s College World Series

2002 held at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on May 24-28.

Champion – California Golden Bears (56-19)
Runner Up – Arizona Wildcats (55-12)

For California pitcher Jocelyn Forest, facing Pacific-10 Conference rival Arizona on a national stage with the NCAA title on the line likely was easier than facing the Wildcats just six weeks before in a regular-season home game. That was when the senior, after taking a week off in April to mourn the death of her sister, returned to the mound and threw without practice against defending national champion Arizona.

Forest was a magician then, allowing just one hit, and she repeated the feat in the Women’s College World Series title game May 27 to claim California’s first championship in any women’s sport and earn most outstanding player honors. Forest won four games, struck out 33 and allowed only nine hits over 28 innings.

The Golden Bears’ 6-0 victory over Arizona and ace Jennie Finch stopped the Wildcats’ bid for a sixth title.

  • Most Outstanding Player – Jocelyn Forest, California
  • Batting Leader – Natasha Watley, UCLA – .462
  • RBI Leader – Jackie Coburn, Arizona – 4
  • Home Run Leader – 8 tied at 1
  • ERA Leader – Keira Goerl, UCLA – 0.35
