County Sports was a gracious host for the tournament, except between the lines as it slugged its way to the championship. They had to battle its way past seven opponents, including three on the 
last day which included 16 of the top softball teasm in the nation. Tournament Director and County Sports Manager, George 'Doc' Linnehan kept his team focused. The County Sports squad started out
by outlasting the Virginia Beach Piledrivers 30-29 in which they scored 16 runs in the sixth inning to pull off the win. Next, they were beaten by the powerful Hicksville Astros. That is where they had 
to battle their way from the loser's bracket. After eliminating Taylor Construction of Providence, Jo's Pizza of Milton, FL and the Indian Lakes Piledrivers of Virginia Beach. They had to defeat the
undefeated Hicksville Astros twice to win the title. They did so by the scores of 24-20 and then 30-23.  County Sport's Bob Lombardi was the MVP as he batted .677 for the tournament, including 11 for 12 in 
the final three games. Bill Malloy was the HR champ with 13. County's two big superstars, Bert Smith led the way as well. Smith batted .734 and hit 12 Homers, while Jim Galloway went 26-36 for a .722
average.

In opening round action, County Sports of Levittown clobbered Votures Express of Worcester, MA 27-7 and 
then slammed 17 HRs in a 27-16 rout of Taylor Construction of Rhode Island. As expected, the crowd came
to see "Mr. Softball" Jim Galloway and he left them happy as he was 9 for 10 on the day with 6 HRs and 10
RBIs. Lou Russo added 4 dingers. Bill Malloy and Steve Shurina each poked one as well. Nassau PD upset ASA 
National Industrial Champion, Pharr Yarn of McAdenville, NC 21-20. Nassau PD was led by Jim Saracco and 
Gary Cresswell as each had 5 RBIs in their game with Pharr Yarn. Saracco hit 2 HRs as did John Bradley. 
The PD squad dropped their second game to Parasalt of RHode Island 11-5. The 1971 ASA National Champion 
Welch Piledrivers of Virginia Beach, VA are entered as are the Chattanooga's Card's Carpets, who feature 
Stand Harvey and Ron Patterson, two of the most prestigious power hitters in the country. Penn Glass of 
Smithtown, NY and Pinters Trucking Nets of Wataugh, NY are scheduled to play. Industrial power, Grumman 
Aircraft of nearby Bethpage, NY will see action later as will these great teams: Trenton's Shaeffer Post, 
Academy of Michigan, and Canal Lanes of Massachusetts. Jim Galloway, the Astros power hitting second basemen 
and last year's MVP will be the leading contender for retaining the trophy. He is a recreation director 
for Queen's Children's Center in Queen's Village. He is sometimes referred to as the Babe Ruth of Softball. 
Last year, all he did was go 24 for 28 (.857 batting average) and slugged 12 Homers.

Levittown Legion upset Howards 24-23 and Empire County Astroc beat Virginia Doors 22-11 to set up
an all Long Island winners bracket final. The Astros, earlier defeated the Trenton Caps 18-1 and
the Nassau Bluecoats 19-6. Howards belted 25 HRs in its first two games defeated York, PA 34-12 
and Pinters Nets Trucking of Long Island 30-10. Howards hit 10 more HRs over Levittown Legion in
their game, but the Legion countered with 11 of their own. Bill Sniffen hit 5 HRs for Legion.
Bobby Mercer hit 3 more for the 1972 ASA Class-A National Champs. The big story was Bert Smith,
former Long Islander and County Sports star, now with Howards coming home to his familiar surroundings.
He did not disapoint as he went 14 for 16 with 9 HRs on the day. He came into the Tournament as 
the nation's leading hitter with a .736 bating average an just last weekend, he was MVP of the big
Pick of Dixie tournament. He started the tournament with 32 straignt hits and finished 32-36 with
27 HRs. He has hit 107 HRs in Howard's 64 games they have played so far. The Nassau PD was eliminated
with losses to County Sports Astros 19-6 and Triton Oil of Wichita, KS 11-2. The Nets rebounded from
the trouncing by Howards to beat Classic Lounge of Providence, RI. Levittown Legions first 2 wins were
at the expense of the Trenton Legionnaires (16-10) and Watts-Brennan of Long Island (16-15)
