Encore of Prince George’s County, MD, emerged as the Women’s Class A slow pitch national champion in a field of 39 teams at Hamilton, OH on Labor Day weekend with a 2-1 win over Larry’s Cabinets of Everett, WA.
Led by shortstop and tournament MVP Carol Byrd, Encore held off Larry’s 2-1 in the championship game. In the last inning, Larry’s loaded the bases, but Byrd’s throw cut down a runner at the plate and a roller to second ended the game.
Encore finished the season with a 56-14 record with nine of the losses by a margin of one run. Larry’s Cabinets meanwhile, had a final season record of 65-6.
Connie Culbreth of Spartansburg, SC, led the tournament in hitting with a .750 average (12-16), while Byrd, a junior at George Washington University, led Encore in hitting with a .500 average (12-24).
